How To Find The Perfect Yoga Pants

Author: Carmena Su

Who are we trying to kid? Yoga is a practice with a spiritual basis but a modern yoga class, like any group athletic endeavor, has something of the spectator – people check out what the other person is wearing all the time. Nothing wrong with that in healthy doses! As people become more toned and embodied, something happens – they want to show off the fruits of their hard-earned labor. The quest to find the perfect booty enhancing yoga pant begins.

Here are some practical things to look for when you’re looking for your next pair of yoga pants:

1. Color – it’s a cliché but dark colors like black, brown, dark blue are easier to wear and more flattering than other hues. Grey marle (the old school athletic sports grey of old gym shirts) is cute but risks making you look a bit collegiate. Plus it really shows sweat. White can be a tough hue to pull off but it can be super stylish. A form-fitting pair of white pants requires supreme confidence and if you feel you have the legs to do it, go for it!

2. Fabric – the ideal is to find something that is at once heavy enough to give you good support around the butt, thighs and waist, but not so heavy that it feels constricting. This is especially important if you’re wearing a lighter color for the ‘cling’ factor. Look for fabrics that are ideally natural fibers as they allow your body to breathe when doing a challenging practice. Cotton is one of the best natural materials as it’s widely available, easy to look after and very comfortable. Choose organically grown cotton whereever possible. Something that you can also just throw in the washing machine is essential. Most pants for active wear should also be color-fast.

3. Cut – this is critical in finding that perfect pant. By far the most universally flattering length for most people is the bootleg with a little flare at the ankle. This cut works on pretty much all body shapes as it makes the legs look longer and the hips a little narrower. Choose pants with a wider rather than a narrower waistband to avoid discomfort in forward bends and to feel comfortable and supported. Most people feel best when the waist-band sits an inch or so above the hips. Another bane of yoga pants is the dread ‘camel toe’ look at the crotch. Avoid this by making sure the pants are not too tight across the thigh and the rise is not too low. Things like a faux fly, will help to draw attention away from this.

All of the above information also goes for shorter length pants also, such as capris, although the boot cut, as mentioned, is the most flattering cut. When you find those perfect pants, don’t forget to take good care of them! Do not use bleach, or overly hot water when washing your pants. This will cause undue wear and tear. Once you found those pants, treat them like your best friend – with care!

When you have the pants, the rest of your outfit is a breeze!
